Fluorocarbon Surfactant 1630 | Mechanism of Low-Residue Cleaning with Alcohol Ether for PCB Circuit Boards, Advantageous Formulation Systems

I. Basic Product Properties (Suitable for PCB Electronic Cleaning)

FC-1630 is a short-chain anionic fluorocarbon surfactant free of PFOS and PFOA, compatible with mixed solvent systems consisting of alcohol ethers, isoparaffins and IPA. Different from conventional nonionic fluorocarbons, it features four core properties for electronic cleaning: powerful interfacial stripping capacity, high solvent compatibility, ultra-low residue and low foaming performance compatible with ultrasonic processes. It serves as a special functional additive for removing post-soldering flux residues, ionic contamination and micro-particles on PCBs.

II. Core Cleaning Mechanism of Alcohol Ether Solvents for PCBs (Micro Industrial Principles)

Aiming at stubborn contaminants inside microvias, solder masks, pads and pin gaps of PCB circuit boards (including rosin flux, organic acid residues, inorganic ions, micro dust and oil stains), FC-1630 delivers precision cleaning with low residues via four synergistic mechanisms, which is perfectly matched with alcohol ether solvent systems:
  1. Extreme reduction of surface and interfacial tension to realize micron-level spreading and penetration
Pure alcohol ether solvents have a surface tension of approximately 28–32 mN/m, making it difficult to penetrate microvias smaller than 0.1 mm, the undersides of BGAs and pin crevices on PCBs. After a tiny amount of FC-1630 is added, the surface tension of the system can drop to 14–18 mN/m, greatly lowering the solid-liquid interfacial free energy. This enables the cleaning solution to fully wet the complex structures of PCBs and addresses the industry-wide pain points of conventional cleaners such as insufficient penetration, incomplete cleaning and hidden residues.
  2. Competitive interfacial adsorption plus dirt stripping and desorption
The fluorocarbon-based hydrophobic and oleophobic dual-phobic segments of FC-1630 can rapidly adsorb onto the surfaces of oil stains and rosin resin residues, while its anionic hydrophilic groups anchor to the alcohol ether solvent phase. Through competitive interfacial adsorption, it displaces the bonding force between contaminants and PCB substrates, swelling, stripping and dispersing cured rosin and aged flux to prevent white film-like residues.
  3. Ion encapsulation and chelation to eliminate electrochemical residual corrosion
The key challenge in PCB cleaning lies in contamination from chloride ions, organic acid radicals and trace metal ions, which are primary causes of circuit board leakage current, mildew growth and abnormal impedance. The anionic active groups of FC-1630 encapsulate and disperse polar ionic contaminants. Combined with the polar dissolving capacity of alcohol ether solvents, trace ionic impurities are dissolved into the solvent system and fully volatilize along with solvents after cleaning, leaving no ionic residues and safeguarding the insulating performance of PCBs.
  4. Low foaming property compatible with precision cleaning processes
Unlike conventional hydrocarbon surfactants that generate abundant foam and tend to leave foam residues, FC-1630 exhibits low foamability, easy foam breaking and no foam stabilization residues in alcohol ether systems. It is fully compatible with mass production processes including ultrasonic cleaning, spray cleaning and immersion cleaning. After cleaning, flat board surfaces free of water marks, white spots and rainbow stains are obtained, meeting high cleanliness standards for electronic products.
